I welcome my first puppy. What to do ? – The blog

The education of a puppy is not an obvious thing and it is not uncommon to apprehend it. It is indeed the essential element that will ensure serenity in your home and in the life of your dog. Here are a few lines to help you position yourself in this new adventure!First of all, you need:
– Respect the different phases of development of the puppy
– Socialize the puppy to other dogs & humans

Yes, we agree. This deserves further explanation…

In nature, the mother undertakes the education of the puppies until their 5-6 months. In the domestic system, she only has one month to do so. It therefore lacks 4 months of canine education when they arrive at their owners. At 2 months, the puppy is still in the attachment phase with respect to its mother. It is therefore essential to avoid any abrupt change. A gradual transition must be initiated between the mother and her new environment. The distancing of the mother from her young helps in this transition. It should ideally be completed by its owners accompanied by breeders. For example, you can put clothes with the scent of its future owners in the puppy’s enclosure, play with only one puppy at a time, take advantage of spontaneous distancing on its part to initiate positive contacts, etc. If this step is not respected, the puppy risks being emotionally scarred and developing an anxious, even fearful nature. This step is therefore key for its development.

Up to 4 months, the dog observes and associates. Positive things are thus positively associated with life. All the work has to be done BEFORE 4 months.

You don’t train a puppy. We give him the necessary balance so that he can learn.

Our role as master is therefore above all to put the puppy in a state of receptivity, he will be an actor in his learning. From the moment we impose on the puppy, he will feel captive and will therefore have no choice. The three options he will have will therefore be flight, resignation or reply. The whole challenge of education is therefore to have a leadership role.

In a pack, the leader is a reassuring and regulating dog. He is the one who organizes the group to survive. It is therefore not a question of hierarchy here but of trust. Educating your puppy means ensuring that it is well in 2 societies, canine society and human society. He must be bilingual but also bi-social.

He It is possible that some puppies exhibit a natural detachment over time. In this case, let them be. We must not confuse attachment and hyper-attachment. Contacts in play should be maintained without being ubiquitous in the puppy’s life.

Another precision which is not the least: The dog is a social animal, it is not made to be alone. He is ideally either with a social group (his masters) or with his congeners. A different situation is not natural to him and must therefore be the subject of an apprenticeship: the apprenticeship of solitude, with patience and pedagogy.
