Prepare your spring stews

  • by

Of course, at the beginning of autumn, we will go through winter before experiencing spring, but for it to be flowery and enchanting, it is necessary to anticipate and prepare the planters now that will bloom with the first rays of spring sunshine. Admittedly, you haven’t cleaned up your garden yet because it’s still a bit early, so turn to your planters and pots of tomorrow to plant bulbs and biennials!

Prepare your spring stews

Choose pretty containers

If the flowers are essential in the approval and the aesthetics of the ornamental garden, do not neglect especially the containers of your plants not intended to be installed in the ground because they contribute largely to the decorative interest.

If you appreciate color, harmonize the containers, on the one hand, with the tones of your shutters and other installations appearing in a close environment, and on the other hand, with the colors of the flowerings to come.

To stay in neutral shades that will highlight the colors of the flowers, you will opt for terracotta planters or zinc pots.

Think about the environment and try to recycle or divert certain objects that can be used to create pots: old wicker basket, galvanized steel basin, wine crate or wooden pallet planter!

Whatever the container, it must be pierced at the bottom so that the water can evacuate. A layer of clay balls in the bottom will help with drainage, but above all choose a good soil for flowering plants.

Biennials and spring bulbs

At the end of winter, biennials and small bulbs will show their spring flowers first, thanks to their robustness and resistance to cold.

For biennials, among the best known, you will be spoiled for choice between the vast varieties of pansy, daisy, primrose, wallflower, forget-me-not, etc.

The small bulbs chosen from among those of crocuses, grape hyacinths, hyacinths, narcissus, snowdrops or small tulips will harmonize perfectly with the biennials.

To play even more with volumes, shapes and colors, you can add, if the size of your container allows it, grasses (Blue Fescue, PennisetumCarex…) and perennials with decorative evergreens (Heuchera, Ophiopogon, Sedum…).

The abundance of colorful flowers will bring your garden back to life before the end of winter, like the announcement of the imminent arrival of spring!
